The Avalanche Canada Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 (AST1) Course will provide an entry-level decision-making framework that is based on the most advanced knowledge available.

AST 1 + ICE/NAV 

Recognising the unique challenges of Australia's backcountry, characterised by whiteout or blizzard conditions, falls on ice, and occasional avalanches.

This extended course seamlessly blends the standard AST 1 Avalanche Canada curriculum with an additional day dedicated to Basic Intro to Ski Mountaineering and Alpine Navigation. 

The AST 1 + ICE/NAV course combines 8 hours of interactive online AST 1 learning with one day in the field, plus an additional day focused on Basic Ski Mountaineering and Alpine Navigation. Participants gain essential ski mountaineering skills and navigation techniques, building confidence and safety for travel in Australia’s alpine terrain.

The minimum age for the standard AST 1 certificate is 16. Students between the ages of 12 and 15 will receive a “youth certificate”.
