AST 1 + ICE/NAV
AST 1 + ICE/NAV
Recognising the unique challenges of Australia's backcountry, characterised by whiteout or blizzard conditions, falls on ice, and occasional avalanches.
This extended course combines the standard Avalanche Canada AST 1 curriculum with an additional day dedicated to introductory ski mountaineering and alpine navigation skills.
The AST 1 + ICE/NAV course includes up to 6 hours of online learning and two days of practical field training.
Day one covers the standard AST 1 curriculum, focusing on avalanche awareness, terrain assessment, and companion rescue skills. Day two is split between introductory ski mountaineering skills and navigation techniques, helping participants build the confidence, knowledge, and decision-making skills needed to travel safely in Australia's alpine environment.
The minimum age for the standard AST 1 certificate is 16. Students between the ages of 12 and 15 will receive a “youth certificate”.
