The Avalanche Canada Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 (AST1) Course will provide an entry-level decision-making framework that is based on the most advanced knowledge available.

AST 1 + ICE/NAV 

Recognising the unique challenges of Australia's backcountry, characterised by whiteout or blizzard conditions, falls on ice, and occasional avalanches.

This extended course combines the standard Avalanche Canada AST 1 curriculum with an additional day dedicated to introductory ski mountaineering and alpine navigation skills.

The AST 1 + ICE/NAV course includes up to 6 hours of online learning and two days of practical field training.

Day one covers the standard AST 1 curriculum, focusing on avalanche awareness, terrain assessment, and companion rescue skills. Day two is split between introductory ski mountaineering skills and navigation techniques, helping participants build the confidence, knowledge, and decision-making skills needed to travel safely in Australia's alpine environment.

The minimum age for the standard AST 1 certificate is 16. Students between the ages of 12 and 15 will receive a “youth certificate”.
