The Avalanche Canada Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 (AST1) Course will provide an entry-level decision-making framework that is based on the most advanced knowledge available.

AST 1 + Intro tour 

Learn backcountry touring basics and get some turns in while completing your AST 1.

This extended course combines the standard Avalanche Canada AST 1 curriculum with an additional day dedicated to introductory ski touring skills and backcountry travel techniques.

The AST 1 + Intro Tour course includes up to 6 hours of online learning and two days of practical field training.

Day one covers the standard AST 1 curriculum, focusing on avalanche awareness, terrain assessment, and companion rescue skills. Day two is dedicated to ski touring, allowing participants to develop efficient uphill travel techniques, transition skills, route selection, and backcountry travel strategies while applying the avalanche awareness and decision-making skills learned throughout the course.

The minimum age for the standard AST 1 certificate is 16. Students between the ages of 12 and 15 will receive a “youth certificate”.
